Immunotherapy What is immunotherapy and how does it work ? Immunotherapy is one of the several methods used to treat mesothelioma cancer and have already yielded variable results over the years. Immunotherapy is usually used in conjunction with another treatment, such as chemotherapy or radiation. Immunotherapy stimulates the immune system and helps to fight the mesothelioma cancer. As we know, the immune system reacts to antigens. These antigens are anything that causes the immune system to respond, like viruses, germs and parasites. The immune sytem will kill the antigen and anything that may be attached to it. Immunotherapy is relatively new and scientists believe that immunotherapy stops the growth of cancer cells. This in return, prevents the cancer from spreading and helps the immune system to react more promptly. Immunotherapy can be given in pill form, IV or injection. |
