Peritoneal Mesothelioma What is Peritoneal Cancer Mesothelioma? Peritoneal cancer Mesothelioma is also known as peritoneal asbestos lung cancer or abdominal mesothelioma that affects the thin cell membrane called the peritoneum. These cells surrounds the gastrointestinal tract and provides lubrication for the stomach and intestines to move and function properly. Peritoneal mesothelioma may cause failure in the peritoneum which results in severe and debilitating consequences. In this case, asbestos fibres enters the digestive system and makes its way to the stomach where it will penetrate the stomach lining. As more and more of these asbestos fibres penetrates the stomach, the cells on the exterior stomach lining will begin to mutate into mesothelioma cells. These mesothelioma asbestos cancer cells accumulates into mesothelioma tumors, and eventually overwhelm the peritoneum. The peritoneum will be prevented from making the protective stomach lining and in some cases the growing mesothelioma tumor will exert pressure on organs causing great pain.
